Wadi Al Rayan consists of two lakes that have different altitudes, therefore a waterfall was created where they meet, there seems to be no end to this water and its level has gone up to 6 meters. Wadi El Rayan is distinguished by its integrated desert environment, including sand dunes, natural eyes, different plant life and various animals, as well as marine fossils, and the waterfalls' area is one of the different marine sports areas. The reserve has 15 types of wildlife, the most important of them are (the white deer - the Egyptian gazelle - Fennec Fox - Sand Fox - Wolf) There are also several types of hawks.
About 40 km from Wadi Al Rayan riding 4 × 4 vehicle we reach Wadi El-Hitan ( "Valley of the Whales") is a paleontological site as well as a natural reserve, It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 for its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest forms of whales The first fossil skeletons of whales were discovered in 1902 The site reveals evidence for the explanation of one of the greatest mysteries of the evolution of whales. The fossils found at Wadi El-Hitan such as sharks, crocodiles, sawfish, turtles and rays as well the good condition of preservation makes it possible to imagine the environmental and ecological circumstances of that age, also provides evidence of millions of years of coastal marine life.
The Museum of Fossils and Climate Change in Wadi El-Hitan houses an enormous collection of fossils, the masterpiece is a complete skeleton of a whale about 18 meters long. The building is lit only by natural light, and because of its underground location, it keeps an ideal temperature all year-round. It is a unique Museum in Egypt and the entire Middle East, there are dozens of fossils exhibited in an adjacent open-air museum.
Wadi El-Hitan is also home to many species of desert plants, and types of wild mammals including the North African jackal, red fox, Egyptian mongoose, African wildcat, and Dorcas gazelle. Wadi El-Hitan is a wonderful place for camping and enjoying the desert atmosphere and the magical views of the twinkling stars and astronomical phenomena in the sky.
