The museum of Islamic art was erected in1903 to house the valuable collection of Islamic antiquities stored since 1880 in the SE riwaq of Hakim mosque and that of the khedival library later increased by masterpieces from excavation and donations the number of objects in the museum is almost 75000 displayed in 23 halls most of them named according to the Islamic period from the Umayyad period passing throw the Abbasid, Fatimid to the Mamluk and Ottoman period. Among the very interesting pieces, you enjoy seeing, wooden panels carved with genre scenes of animals and birds, wooden tabut of Huseyn, mosaic from various mosques, metalwork ewers, candlesticks and mirrors, chandeliers, vases, incense -burners, some with Christian symbols, arms and armour including swords daggers, rifles and pistoles some with the names of sultans or emirs like the sword of Murad bey used against Napoleon in the battle of the pyramid also manuscripts and books, enamelled glass, mosque lamps bottles and cups of incised glass, a superb collection of Persian art ceramics metalwork textiles and Turkish carpets.
